Legal work in Czechia: protection, registration, address

With temporary protection, Ukrainians in the Czech Republic can work without a permit. However, there are rules, and violating them can cost you both your job and your status.

Status

  • Those who completed both extension steps on time (online registration and a visit to the Ministry of the Interior by September 30, 2026) will have temporary protection until March 31, 2027.
  • The EU has extended protection until March 4, 2028. In the Czech Republic, after a new online registration and a visit for a stamp, the protection will be valid until March 31, 2028. The Ministry of the Interior will announce the registration dates on the Information Portal for Foreigners (ipc.gov.cz).
  • For new applicants, a military duty requirement applies from August 5, 2026; it does not apply to extensions.

Work

  • Work permit not required.
  • The employer must notify Úřad práce about you before you start working, and from July 1, 2026 — also register you for social security (ČSSZ) before your first day. Working without this is illegal, and fines apply not only to the company but also to the employee (up to 100 000 Kč).
  • Employment contract — written, with a copy for each party.
  • From June 1, 2025, salaries are paid by default to a bank account.

Address — this is important

  • Any change of residence (over 15 days) must be reported to the Ministry of the Interior within 3 working days, along with a housing document.
  • If the Ministry of the Interior cancels your address (you do not live there or the contract has expired), your address becomes the "government address". After 90 days at this address, temporary protection expires — and with it, health insurance and legal employment.

Medical insurance

You are insured from the day protection is granted. When working, you pay your share of the contribution from your salary (≈4.5%), and the employer pays the rest.

Special long-term residence. For working individuals who have been under protection for 2 years and have an annual income of at least 440 000 Kč, there is an opportunity to obtain residence for 5 years. Registration from October 1 to December 31, 2026, is open only to those who submitted an expression of interest in April 2026.
