How much you can really save

A salary isn't savings yet. Work out what's left after housing, food and transport, and how many months it'll take to reach your target.

An estimate based on average prices — real costs depend on the city, housing and lifestyle. Enter your income as net (take-home): if you only know your gross, work out the net first in the gross↔net calculator.

Why “a 5000 salary” doesn't tell you much

“How much do they pay” almost always has a follow-up question people forget: how much of that is left over. Two identical salaries produce very different savings if in one case the employer covers housing, and in the other you're renting a room in Warsaw.

So when comparing jobs, don't look at the rate alone — look at the combination of rate + housing + city. An offer with a slightly lower rate but free housing often leaves you with more “in hand at month's end.”

What your expenses are made of

  • Housing — the biggest item. A shared bed is cheaper than a room, a room cheaper than an apartment; sharing with someone pays off.
  • Food — depends on whether you cook yourself or buy prepared meals.
  • Transport — a monthly pass is usually cheaper than single tickets.
  • Phone/internet and other — phone, internet, everyday odds and ends, clothes.

FAQ

How much do people typically manage to save?
It's very individual, but the rule of thumb is simple: if the employer covers housing, savings are usually much higher. Try both scenarios in the calculator — the difference will be obvious.
I only know my gross — what should I enter?
First work out your net in the gross↔net calculator, then plug that figure in here.
Should I include overtime?
Yes, if it's regular — add it to your net income. You can work out the premium in the overtime calculator.
