A first salary in Poland rarely arrives “right away” — and it is often smaller than expected. Here is when to expect it and why.
One of the most common disappointments for newcomers: you arrive, start working — but there is no money for a long time. This is not a scam, but how salary payment is arranged in Poland. Let's figure out when to expect your first money.
By law, salaries are paid monthly, by the 10th day of the following month. This means that for work in September, the money will arrive by October 10. If you started working in the middle of the month, the first payment will also be partial — only for the days worked.
The second reason for surprise is the difference between gross and net. The employer usually quotes gross, but net arrives on the card — 25–30% less after ZUS, medical contributions, and tax. Therefore, "25 zł per hour" is not what you will get in hand.
Since the first full salary arrives only after 5–6 weeks, it is critically important to have a reserve of money for this period: housing, food, transport. The relocation cost calculator will help you calculate exactly how much.
If you worked over the standard hours, extra pay for overtime (+50%/+100%) is added to the salary — but also in the next payout, not immediately. Make sure that the employer keeps track of your hours.
